Colorado rival expected to cancel spring football game

by

Colorado’s biggest rival on the gridiron isn’t expected to play a traditional spring football game this year.

According to USA TODAY Sports, Nebraska coach Matt Rhule told reporters on Saturday that he highly doubts the Cornhuskers will hold a spring game due to concerns over the transfer portal. Rhule shared that after last year’s televised spring game, other teams reached out to his players.

“To go out and bring in a bunch of new players and then showcase them for all the other schools to watch, that doesn’t make a lot of sense to me,” Rhule said (h/t USA TODAY Sports).

Nebraska finished 7-6 this past season in Rhule’s second year at the helm. According to 247Sports, the Cornhuskers have had 27 players enter the transfer portal this offseason. In comparison, Colorado lost 19.

Under coach Deion Sanders, Colorado has been one of college football’s most aggressive users of the transfer portal in recent years. The Buffs have gained 17 commits via the portal this offseason.

Colorado announced Friday that its annual Black and Gold Day spring football game will be held on April 19 at Folsom Field.
