After a 4-8 season last year, many questions surrounded this season, whether the Cougars’ Head Coach, Willie Fritz, could bounce back. Many analysts predicted the Cougars to finish in the middle of the pack in the Big 12.

Tonight, Fritz and the Cougars brought back some of that 2015 energy, starting 1-0 in the Big 12. With their win over the Colorado Buffaloes and HC Deion Sanders, 36 to 20.  The Cougars controlled the game clock for 12:49 seconds in the 3rd quarter.

Cougars QB Conner Weigman pounded the ground with 83 rushing yards and 2 touchdowns, as well as throwing for 222 yards in the air.

This is the first time since 2016 that the Cougars have started with a 3-0 record.  They snapped a 21-game streak without eclipsing 400 yards of offense, including 200+ rushing yards. The Cougars were also the second-worst scoring offense in the country, behind Kent State.

The Buffaloes went into this game starting their 3rd string QB Ryan Staub, after both QBs Julian Lewis and Kaidon Salter had shaky starts in their first two weeks. QB Staub finished 19 for 35 with 1 touchdown and 2 interceptions. The Buffaloes fall to 1-2 last time that happened was in 2022, when they finished the season 1-11 before HC Sanders was hired.

Coming out of this game, the Cougars look stronger than many people realized, and heading into this season. With a poised veteran QB in Weigman, the Cougars could make the Big 12 title race interesting. For the Buffaloes, HC Sanders needs to figure out their QB situation if they still want to have a successful year.

WHAT’S NEXT?

The Cougars have a bye week coming up, and after that, they will play at the Oregon State Beavers’ house in week 5. The Buffaloes play the Wyoming Cowboys next week on Saturday at home.
