With Conclusion of Winter Olympics, Countdown Begins for Next Games โ LA28
With the Milan/Cortina flame extinguished on Sunday, thus ending the 25th edition of the Olympic Winter Games, the countdown can begin to the 2028 Olympic Summer Games in Los Angeles. The Southern California city will serve as Olympic host for the third time, following previous Games in L.A. in 1932 and 1984. As of Sunday night, there are 873 days until LA28, which will run from July 14-30.
When Los Angeles hosts the next Summer Games, it will join London (1908, 1948, 2012) and Paris (1900, 1924 and 2024) as the only cities to handle hosting duties on three occasions. When L.A. was the host in 1984, the Games unfolded without the Eastern Bloc countries, who boycotted in retaliation for the United States boycott of the 1980 Games in Moscow. LA28 will mark the first time the Summer Games have been held on American soil since 1996, when Atlanta was the host.
International Swimming Hall of Famer Kirsty Coventry will preside over the Games as the President of the International Olympic Committee. The Winter Games in Milan/Cortina were her first as the head of the IOC. Coventry is a seven-time Olympic medalist in the pool while representing her homeland of Zimbabwe.
The dates for the swimming events in Los Angeles are July 22-30, with the Closing Ceremony immediately following the conclusion of the 400 medley relays. Swimming will take place at SoFi Stadium, which will have seating for approximately 38,000 fans. LA28 will also be the first Games in which the 50-meter stroke events are contested.
