Markquese Bell has called Dallas his NFL home for the last four seasons, but a fifth won’t come easily. With the Cowboys’ new defensive look and significant investment at safety, Bell could be swept away in a wave of change. This 2026 training camp could have serious ramifications for his career.

Despite being an FCS All-American in his senior year at Florida A&M, Bell went undrafted in 2022. While possessing great size and length for an NFL safety, that big frame comes with a lack of quickness that causes issues in pass coverage. Still, he signed with Dallas after the draft and had a strong camp. He earned a spot on the 53-man roster, though he was inactive most of the season. In the five games Bell did play, it was almost entirely on special teams.
In 2023, with Dallas shorthanded at linebacker, Bell moved into a surprisingly big role on Dan Quinn’s defense as a hybrid LB. Quinn had been using Jayron Kearse in this way, mainly in nickel looks, and Bell took it a step further with even more LB usage in other formations. He finished second on the team in tackles behind Damone Clark, playing all 17 games and starting eight.
With the move to Mike Zimmer as defensive coordinator in 2024, Dallas went away from some of its “small ball” practices and Bell went back to safety. He fell down the depth chart, only getting 34 defensive snaps in nine games, but remained active on special teams. A shoulder injury in Week 11 ended his season prematurely.
Despite the down year, Bell got a three-year contract extension in 2025 at about $3 million per season. It was a mutually beneficial agreement, reducing Bell’s cap hit from what a restricted free agent tender would cost but giving him some job security in exchange. Bell’s role also increased last year as one of the core backups at safety, which included three starts.

Ahead of this crucial fifth season and with a new defensive coaching staff to impress, Bell got off to a bad start with an arrest last April for marijuana possession. If Bell is released, it will come with zero cap relief and push about $833k dead money onto next year’s cap. That isn’t enough to keep him around if Dallas prefers another player, but it could be a tiebreaker in Bell’s favor at final cuts.

Bell has one of the more enigmatic situations this summer. His experience and versatility are valuable, but we’ve seen how shifts in defensive coordinators have helped and hurt his status and playing time. Bell’s limitations in coverage and Parker’s expected use of two-high safety formations don’t seem like a great pairing, but what if Parker likes Bell’s past work in the hybrid LB role? And if nothing else, Bell’s been a core special teams player for a while, which matters most at the bottom of the roster.
At this point, it feels like Bell’s outside looking in and hoping for an injury. Between all the new defensive backs and linebackers, it feels like “out with the old” is a theme this summer. As long as the handpicked rookies and free agents stay healthy and show competence, Bell feels like a holdover whose best days came and went with Dan Quinn. Don’t be surprised if Bell isn’t a Commander by September.

Still, Bell’s survived this long by continuing to show up in Oxnard and earn his spot. That same opportunity lays before him now. The legal issue shouldn’t make a difference: Bell isn’t going to have a large enough role to make a brief suspension painful for the team. As long as he outplays the down-roster competition, and there’s a clear role for him in the new scheme, Bell could get at least one more year with the Cowboys.
