Dec. 13—COWETA — A big offensive slump led to Tahlequah girls basketball’s first loss of the season at Coweta 57-22.
The Lady Tigers picked up just two points in the second and third quarters combined on Friday, Dec. 13 on the road. This loss is the first of the season for the Lady Tigers who started 2-0.
“Offensively we had a poor performance tonight,” THS head coach David Qualls said. “We shot a low percentage and only made on three-pointers, while turning it over way too much. We didn’t give ourselves a chance because of our lack of efficiency on offense.”
THS kept it close early with CHS holding a 13-9 lead midway through the first quarter. An offensive slump put the Lady Tigers down 17-11 as they finished with just a pair of points to end the game.
Those small issues soon became big for the Lady Tigers in the second quarter. It took over six minutes for the Lady Tigers to score a point and it lasted as the lone point in the quarter for a THS squad that was averaging 56 points a game heading into the game. After the 22-point performance, the Lady Tigers are now averaging 44.6 ppg.
THS couldn’t find a remedy during halftime, as the struggles worsened. CHS; defense completely locked down shutting out the Lady Tigers in the quarter.
After scoring no points in the third, THS quickly broke the streak in the fourth quarter. But it was too little and too late as CHS cruised to a 57-22 win.
“We can take a lot away from this game,” Qualls said. “We got to play a team that was in the Sate Semifinals last year and returned everyone. They played really well and hit 12 three-pointers tonight. You have to give them a ton of credit.”
The Lady Tigers are back in action at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 17 at Will Rogers.
