But assumed backup QB Kenny Minchey “could end up winning the job,” according to a report from CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz.
“Once Steve Angeli entered the transfer portal in mid-April, many around the college football landscape viewed it as even more of an inevitability that Class of 2024 top-50 overall recruit CJ Carr would become Notre Dame’s new starting quarterback,” Zenitz wrote. “However, four months later, that’s far from a certainty — as we detailed Monday in the debut of the College Football Insiders. In fact, it’s starting to look more and more like another quarterback — redshirt sophomore Kenny Minchey — could end up winning the job.”
Angeli transferred to Syracuse in the spring, leaving Carr as the assumed successor to Riley Leonard. Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman has given both Carr and Minchey reps with the first-team offense in camp, and the results are mixed for both quarterbacks.
Carr had more pedigree out of high school, ranked as the top player from Michigan and the No. 6 quarterback in the nation. On the other hand, Minchey was the 14th-ranked QB in his class.

Notre Dame offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock left the door open for Minchey to earn the starting job near the beginning of fall camp.
“There is absolutely no reason why Kenny can’t be the starter,” Denbrock said of the quarterback.
Whichever quarterback wins the competition will command an offense laden with play-makers. Jeremiyah Love and Jadarian Price combined for 1,871 rushing yards last fall.
Jaden Greathouse and Jordan Faison return at wide receiver, and the Irish scored a promising target in former Virginia receiver Malachi Fields.
