D’Almeida defends South American title as Colombia rules compound

by

World number four Marcus D’Almeida took the recurve men’s title at the 2025 South American Championships in Medellin, Colombia today, beating Olympian Andres Gallardo.

The Brazilian archer, the top seed and favourite, did not drop a single point on his way to the final, where he faced the Chilean who won silver at the Copa Merengue back in 2023. For D’Almeida, it was a successful defence of the 2024 title he won in Marica.

The Brazilian will go for individual gold again on Sunday, when the competition resumes as a world ranking event.

However, the pair of D’Almeida and Isabelle Trindade Estevez Pereira fell short in the mixed team competition, losing to Colombia’s Jorge Enriquez and veteran Ana Maria Rendon, who claimed the honours.

Pereira was also pipped to the individual recurve women’s title by her teammate and two-time Olympian Ane Marcelle Dos Santos.

Both compound finals were all-Colombian affairs, with Isabella Sepúlveda Mejía and Sebastian Villegas Correa edging out Alejandra Usquiano and Daniel Munoz respectively.

Competition resumes tomorrow with the world ranking event finals in the afternoon.
