D’Almeida, Usquiano double up on gold as Medellin wraps

Alejandra Usquiano claimed gold in the world ranking event at Medellin 2025, defeating Ana Sofía Hernández of Mexico, to add to the South American Championships title she won the day before.

It marked the Colombian’s first outdoor victories of the season, after a successful indoor campaign that included a win in Nimes and a near-miss in Vegas.

Brazil’s Marcus D’Almeida capped a highly successful meet with the world ranking event title in Medellin, also a day after successfully defending his South American crown. He thumped the host nation archer Santiago Arcila in straight sets on the finals field, with ends of 27, 28 and 28.

D’Almeida also led the Brazilian men’s team – alongside Matheus Gomes and Matheus Zwick Ely – to team gold on Thursday at the expense of Chile. However, the same trio narrowly missed out on the South American team title, edged by Colombia.

The ranking points boost pushes D’Almeida up to third in the Sanlida World Ranking list.

The recurve women’s individual competition was an all-Colombian affair between two club archers, with Valeria Yepes Pérez pushing out Isabella Forero Martinez, 6-0, in windy conditions. The 21-year-old Yepes had previously competed at the 2022 Pan American Championship.

Number two seed Juan Del Rio took compound men’s gold on the final day, beating Sebastian Villegas Correa. It was a highlight for Mexico, who fielded their B teams in Colombia to gain international experience, ahead of a busy year for youth archers.

Medellin 2025 marked a dominant performance from the host nation Colombia, who walked away with ten gold medals across both phases of the annual competition – the South American Championships and the world ranking tournament.
