Last season, Dan Hurley again showed why he’s one of the best coaches in college basketball.
After a disappointing end to the previous year’s three-peat chase, the UConn Huskies roared back with a 34-6 record, a 17-3 mark in Big East play, and a return trip to the national championship game.

They didn’t finish the job, falling to Michigan, but the season was still widely viewed as a rebound success and further proof that UConn remains one of the premier programs in the sport.
Now, Hurley has landed another intriguing addition through the transfer portal.
On Thursday, May 21, it was reported that Northern Arizona transfer Isaiah Shaw had committed to UConn, according to ESPN sources, bringing an elite 6-foot-8 sharpshooter to Storrs.

Last season at Northern Arizona, Shaw averaged 8.1 points and 2.1 rebounds in 18.3 minutes across 29 games (22 starts), while shooting an efficient 46.4% from both the field and 3-point range.

He scored 20 or more points on three separate occasions, including a 20-point outing against Embry-Riddle on Nov. 11, when he went 4-of-5 from beyond the arc, followed by a 22-point career high just six days later against Cal Poly, finishing 6-of-10 from the field.
Before Northern Arizona, Shaw spent two seasons at Grand Canyon, where he played limited minutes after arriving in 2022 as a zero-star recruit.
While he has never been the focal point of an offense at the NCAA level, Shaw is an elite shooter with the length to switch defensively and could provide valuable floor spacing and depth for Hurley’s Huskies.

UConn needed more size on the perimeter and more lineup flexibility after losing major contributors from its national runner-up squad, notably veteran leader Alex Karaban and former five-star recruit Jaylin Stewart.
The Huskies have spent the offseason replacing a lot of that production, but you can never have too much depth in college basketball.
Adding a 6-foot-8 floor spacer like Shaw may not be the flashiest headline of portal season, but it’s exactly the kind of under-the-radar move that keeps championship programs in contention.
