Daniel Cormier: Alexander Volkanovski featherweight GOAT after UFC 325

by

Daniel Cormier thinks Alexander Volkanovski solidified his status as featherweight champion with the win at UFC 325.

Volkanovski (28-4 MMA, 15-3 UFC) retained his 145-pound title after defeating Diego Lopes (27-8 MMA, 6-3 UFC) a second-straight time by unanimous decision Saturday at Qudos Bank Arena in Sydney. Volkanovski tied Jose Aldo for most UFC featherweight title wins at eight.

Aldo was long considered the greatest featherweight of all time after notching a division-record seven consecutive title defenses. While that record is still in tact, Cormier thinks Volkanovski’s resume has surpassed “The King of Rio.”

“Nobody wants to fight Movsar (Evloev). Nobody wants to fight Lerone (Murphy). Volk is like, well, if they’re next, that’s who I’m fighting,” Cormier said on his YouTube channel. “He’s not trying to pick fights. He’s not trying to get the easiest path. He just wants to fight those guys. I’m telling you, he’s the greatest featherweight of all time.

“I know we love Jose Aldo. I know we love Max Holloway. But (Volkanovski) just won his eighth UFC featherweight title fight. Four of those victories are against Holloway and Aldo, the two other guys considered the greatest featherweights of all time. It was Volkanovski’s night. He’s the best in the world, and he’s as good as they come. The guy is tremendous, and I really don’t see him slowing down anytime soon.”

Volkanovski, 37, is not short of options for his next title defense. He was called out by Movsar Evloev, Lerone Murphy, and Jean Silva, who are all coming off wins.
