Texas A&M’s tight end room will look vastly different next fall, and heading into spring practice, which starts on Friday, March 20, UTSA transfer TE Houston Thomas will make his official debut after arriving in College Station in early January. On paper, the Aggies lost three tight ends to the NFL Draft and transfer portal, including Theo Melin-Ohrstrom, who transferred to SMU this offseason.
Thomas, who is a College Station native, graduated from high school with Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko’s son, Michael Elko, while the elder Elko has kept track of his impressive career with the Roadrunners, finishing with 68 receptions for 818 yards and five touchdowns over the past two seasons. Combined with junior tight end Koli Armstrong and senior Micah Riley, the Aggies don’t lack depth at one of the most important positions.

Still, who will arise as Texas A&M’s next pass-catching tight end will likely come down to Armstrong and Thomas competing this spring, heading into the fall, getting a chance to show off their unique skill sets during the annual Maroon & White spring game on April 18.
This week, Dave Campbell’s Texas Football writer Mike Craven ranked his top Texas-based tight ends ahead of the 2026 season, as Houston Thomas comes in at No. 2 behind returning Texas Tech star Terrance Carter, who recorded 624 yards and five touchdowns:
Thomas was an American Athletic Conference Third Team selection in 2025 after sharing the tight end room with another talented player – Patrick Overmyer, who is now at Houston. The 6-foot-5, 245-pound Thomas is a College Station native who should become a safety blanket for QB Marcel Reed. He’s an excellent pass catcher and a willing blocker. Thomas impressed Texas A&M coaches in the Week 1 meeting last year when he caught a pair of balls for 22 yards. He’s caught 68 passes for 818 yards and five touchdowns over the past two seasons.
After adding former Alabama wide receiver Isaiah Horton from the transfer portal, redshirt junior quarterback Marcel Reed will have a host of weapons at his disposal, led by junior wideout Mario Craver, who ended his first season in CSTAT with 917 yards and four touchdowns, averaging 15.5 yards per reception. Standing at 6’5″ and 245 pounds, Houston Thomas is a complete tight end who brings immediate value to Texas A&M’s lineup.
