Denmark’s Stephan Hansen is now shooting for the USA, and will be a member of the USAT (United States Archery Team) for the upcoming season, as announced by USA Archery on Wednesday 22 October.
Hansen became the the 2015 World Champion on home soil in Copenhagen, and has medalled in almost every major target tournament around the world, both indoor and outdoor.
Stephan, along with his partner, London 2012 silver medallist Aida Roman have been resident in Yankton, USA from the end of 2024. Hansen also shot multiple qualifier events in 2025 in order to earn a US national ranking.
Under World Archery rules, athletes may compete for another national governing body as long as they have spent a year without competing internationally for the country they were previously competing for. In Hansen’s case, this period would begin in December.
The move does not mean a change in citizenship, as there is a rule that allows resident foreign-born athletes to compete for the USAT. However, Hansen would not be able to compete at the LA28 Olympic Games without becoming a US citizen.
Stephan Hansen has been approached for comment.
