Devin Naoroz Ties Program Mark in 100 Back as Kentucky Sweeps Cincinnati
Devin Naoroz tied the Kentucky program record in the men’s 100 backstroke Friday night as the Wildcats swept Cincinnati.
The men’s team claimed a 186-110 victory. The women prevailed by a 204-92 margin.
Naoroz went 45.91 to win the 100 back. That’s even with the time set by Lysander Osman earlier in the season. Naoroz also won the 200 back in 1:41.97, beating the field by some four seconds.
Osman won the 50 free in 19.56, a time that places him seventh in program history.
The Wildcats mixed up the events a bit Falemana Tuufui won the 100 free in 43.02 and the 100 fly in 47.40 (with Osman second). Caue Gluck won the 500 free in 4:23.81 and was second to Ryan Merani (1:36.69) in the 200 free. Carson Hick won the 1,000 free, with Dziugas Miskinis second in both that and the 500.
Cayden Pitzer led the way with a time of 54.01 in the 100 breaststroke that edged out teammate JT Broome by .01 seconds. Javier Lopez-Guillen won the 200 fly in 1:43.27. Adomas Gatulis won the 200 breast in 1:57.32.
Libby Grether, Grace Frericks, Sarah Shaffer and Arianna Wertheim won twice each for Kentucky’s women’s team. Grether won the 9:51.22 in the 1,000 and 4:49.24 in the 500 free, with Katy Jost second in each. Frericks did the backstroke double, in 53.79 over 100 and 1:57.26 over 200, each ahead of Ally Frame. Wertheim swept butterfly, and Shaffer picked up wins in both breaststroke events.
Madilyn McGlothen won the 200 free, Lauren West was quickest in the 100 free to go with a runner-up result in the 50 free and Fernando De Goeij followed a second-place result in the 200 free by winning the 400 individual medley.
The Wildcats took first place in both diving events, Devynn Bishop scoring 318.30 on 3-meter and Avery Giese tallying 319.73 on 1-meter.
Cincinnati’s lone swimming win on the men’s side came from Kyle Bumgardner, who went 3:53.75 in the 400 IM. Ramez Diaa swept men’s diving, scoring 380.10 on 3-meter and 333.90 on 1-meter. The Bearcats’ Joleigh Crye won the women’s 50 free in 22.83. Cincinnati also started the meet with a win in the 200 medley relay.
