Phoenix Mercury star Diana Taurasi announced her retirement on Tuesday, ending a 20-year career in the WNBA that included three WNBA championships and the league’s all-time scoring record.

“Diana is the greatest to have ever played the game,” Mercury and Suns owner Mat Ishbia said in a statement. “I’ve been a fan of her my entire life, she is the ultimate leader and teammate. She’s had an incredible impact on our franchise, our community and the game of basketball. Her name is synonymous with the Phoenix Mercury and she will forever be part of our family.”

More than that, Taurasi might very well be the greatest athlete ever to perform for an Arizona home team.

Taurasi’s WNBA career ended in a first-round sweep by the Minnesota Lynx in the 2024 playoffs.
