NCAA Division II Championships, Night 3: Drury Takes Relay Record, Men’s Lead

It’s been a long wait for Drury. The Panthers have been runners-up at the men’s NCAA Division II Championships five times since winning their 12th and most recent team title in 2014.

Thursday’s finish to the session at the Indiana University Natatorium might be what they need to get moving toward a title.

Drury finished the session by setting the NCAA record in the men’s 400 medley relay, sending it into Friday with a 29-point edge on the University of Tampa in an effort to dethrone it from the summit of NCAAs. The medley relay also brought a DQ for UIndy, which sits third by is now 69 points in arrears of Tampa, likely ending its title hopes.

The Drury women, likewise searching for a first title since 2014, lead the women’s standings, though the eight-point edge over reigning champ Nova Southeastern is more tenuous.

All the action from Night 3, and team scores as we head to Friday in Indianapolis:

Women’s 200 freestyle

After finishing fifth in the 50 free, Nova Southeastern freshman Kristina Orban got her first gold, going 1:45.92 to win the 200 free. She was second when the field turned for home, but her feverish final 50 of 26.79 helped her surge past Montana White of Azusa Pacific. White was 1:46.06, up a spot from third last year. She traded places with last year’s silver medalist, Tori Meklensek of Simon Fraser, who went 1:46.60 for bronze.

Lucy Hendley, the top seed in prelims, was fourth in 1:47.12, .34 slower than in prelims.

Drury got a big boost by stopping the Clarion glut of points. Isarael Zavaleta scored 596.55 points to win gold, having led the way all day. The three-time NCAA Division III champ at Kenyon leveled up effectively.

It took that to beat a final mainly comprised of Wayne State and Clarion divers. Julia Osuna Kelly of Wayne State was the only diver to top 500 points in both prelims and finals, scoring 571.30 for silver. He had set the meet record of 645.15 points in winning gold last year.

Zakary Kennedy of Clarion led four Golden Eagles in the top eight and five in the top 13 with 506.65 points, a half-point over Max Wasiniak of Wayne State. Michael Flamm also hit 500 points for fifth.

Two B finalists – Matthew Blommel of Grand Valley and Staten Island’s Yubal Parra – also topped 500 points.

Men’s 400 medley relay

McKendree was a tenth of a second quicker than the NCAA record it set in winning last year. But that didn’t matter thanks to Drury going 3:06.75 to undercut the record by .36 seconds. Ivan Adamchuk, Davi Mourao, Alejandro Villarejo and Lucas Minauer got the job done. Drury had been second last year in this race.

Three-quarters of the relay from 2024 – Patryk Rozenek, Jackson Lustig and Tyson Upon – were back for McKendree. Grand Valley was third with Tampa, anchoring Jacob Hamlin, fifth. UIndy was running in the top eight before a disqualification on the final handoff.
