Dusty May’s decision to leave Michigan for the NBA caught many off guard, considering that the Wolverines just won the national championship and had a solid chance of defending their crown next season.
With that said, there were signs that May was looking at greener pastures. Once May’s move to Dallas became official, it was reported that the former Wolverines coach never actually signed an extension, despite Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel announcing it was essentially a done deal in May.

Additionally, May appeared on the Field of 68 show with Jeff Goodman last week and discussed the ever-changing state of college basketball.
“It’s just a low quality of life for most of the people that are involved in it because of the uncertainty and just lack of overall structure,” May said.
Goodman followed up by asking May whether he gets frustrated by the landscape of college basketball, and what specifically frustrates him.
“The frustration is there because you need multiyear contracts…if we’re going to sign a player from a mid-major we should pay some form of buyout and compensation…but the thing that frustrates me is every time there seems to be a solution to, I guess, solve one of the biggest problems, then some of the more well-known coaches come out and say that affects them in a negative way,” May responded.

It’s an interesting retroactive interview considering May bolted for the Mavericks shortly thereafter.
