Elite 2027 4-star DL remains locked in with Texas A&M

by

When taking a closer look at Texas A&M’s No. 1-ranked 2027 recruiting class, several prospects with elite NFL potential stand out, especially five-star offensive tackle Mark Matthews and five-star safety Kamarui Dorsey, who are both expected to earn $1 million in NIL benefits and are ranked No. 2 and No. 19 overall in the latest Rivals300 rankings.

If you were to ask third-year coach Mike Elko which of his 26 commits stands out the most outside of the six five-star commits, blue-chip four-star defensive lineman Myels Smith will likely be the first of several names he mentions, as the incoming Inglewood (CA) senior rapidly rose to No. 45 in the Rivals300 rankings, and is now widely consider one of the best interio defenders in the country.

Last week, Rivals writer/insider Adam Gorney took a look back at the top-ranked California-based prospects, including Smith, who shut down his recruitment late last month, and, according to Gorney, continues to be fully bought into what Mike Elko is building in College Station, and is expected to sign with the Aggies during Early Signing Day in December.

“Malik James, the founder of James Sports Group and Smith’s former coach at Inglewood, would tell anyone who would listen for more than a year that Smith was an elite talent.

He has the size, power, athleticism and everything else needed by a defensive tackle to be special. Texas A&M not only fully believed in Smith but he loves that the Aggies have multiple defensive line coaches – he’s biggest on development – and that the whole coaching staff showed him love.

Washington, Nebraska, Cal, USC and others were all involved but Smith felt the most love from Texas A&M and he’s given no indication of looking anywhere else.”

Even after shutting down his recruitment, this is significant news for Elko and defensive line coaches Elijah Robinson and Tony Jerod-Eddie, whose combined development background should result in Smith reaching his full potential by his second or third season after recording 91 tackles, 10 sacks, 30 tackles for loss, four pass breakups, and a forced fumble.

Combined with four-star defensive lineman Elijah Patmon, Texas A&M’s future defensive tackle rotation is built on size, strength, and freakish athleticism.
