ESPN analyst Paul Finebaum compares Dabo Swinney to lying historical leaders

Paul Finebaum has never hidden his opinion of Dabo Swinney, but his latest criticism may be his most eye-opening yet.

During The Paul Finebaum Show, the ESPN analyst compared the Clemson head coach to historical leaders who repeatedly lied to convince people their version of events was true. Finebaum made the remark while responding to a Clemson fan who defended the Tigers and Swinney, arguing the program is no longer a legitimate national championship contender.

“I think he believes if he keeps repeating the same lie that Clemson is legitimate and Dabo is a good coach, it will make him at least feel better short term,” Finebaum said.

The comment is the latest in what has become a long line of criticism from Finebaum directed at Swinney and Clemson. Since the Tigers finished 7-6 in 2025, he has consistently questioned the direction of the program, saying in May, “I don’t have any faith or belief in Dabo Swinney anymore,” before recently predicting another 8-4 season for Clemson.

“I think he’ll have a winning season. I think another good 8-4 season for Dabo,” Finebaum said.

Finebaum has also criticized Swinney’s standing around college football, particularly after Clemson signed its longtime coach to a new contract.
