FIA strengthens rally safety across Africa with expert-led workshop in Tanzania

FIA Member Clubs from across Africa gathered in Tanzania this week for an extensive two-day workshop on rally safety. Provided by the FIA at no cost to the clubs thanks to the support of the FIA Foundation, the event was led by FIA safety experts and aimed at equipping national clubs (ASNs) with the knowledge and tools to enhance safety standards in both national and regional motor sport events.

FIA Safety Delegate William Louw and Closed Road Commission President Nicolas Klinger facilitated the sessions, which were hosted with the support of Automobile Association of Tanzania (AAT) in Dar es Salaam. As part of the FIA’s commitment to member club development and the implementation of the latest safety protocols to motor sport events across the world, the workshop covered key aspects of rally event preparation, including safety planning, documentation requirements and the latest FIA safety advice and protocols.

During the session, questions were raised regarding the unique challenges regarding hosting rally events in Africa, including the terrain. This allowed the FIA Safety Delegate and Closed Road Commission President to provide dedicated and tailored advice to ensure safe and successful motor sport events across the continent.

Attended by over 30 individuals from member clubs representing countries including Kenya, Nigeria, Tanzania, South Africa, Mozambique, Rwanda and Uganda, the event was welcomed by ASN safety representatives as an invaluable opportunity to receive expert advice and strengthen regional collaboration through the sharing of best practices and shared experiences.

Nicolas Klinger, Closed Road Commission President and FIA WRC Safety Manager, said:

“It was a pleasure to deliver the latest FIA Rally Safety Workshop to our African ASNs in Tanzania. These workshops exemplify the FIA’s commitment to supporting member clubs and refining our global safety messaging by understanding local challenges.

“I’d like to thank the Automobile Association of Tanzania for hosting us, supporting the session and providing such a warm welcome to us all. I look forward to the next event as we continue to provide this resource in every region of the world.”

Nizar Jivani, President of the Automobile Association of Tanzania, said:

“We were honoured to host this important workshop in Dar es Salaam and welcome clubs from across Africa. I’d like to thank Nicolas and William from the FIA for delivering such a thorough and insightful programme. It was a fantastic opportunity to collaborate and explore ways to make motor sport across Africa safer and even more thrilling.”

The FIA will continue to deploy rally safety training sessions in regions around the world with the aim to support ASNs in their efforts to promote safety and ensure that the highest standards are maintained.
