Florida basketball stays at No. 6 in USA Today men’s basketball poll

Florida basketball stayed at No. 6 in this week’s USA Today’s men’s college basketball poll.

The Florida Gators (18-2, 5-2 SEC) have won three straight including back-to-back wins last week at South Carolina (70-69) and at home against Georgia (89-59).

UF’s 30-point win against UGA was its most lopsided by margin since beating the Bulldogs 77-44, on Jan. 9, 2013.

“We’re trying to impress upon our team is if we bring that elite mentality and effort level in every game, especially at home, we’re going to be really tough to play with,” Florida basketball coach Todd Golden said. “Got to do it on the road, obviously, as well. But in these opportunities, where you get good teams on your home floor, you’ve got to take advantage of it. I thought we did that today.”

UF gets a mid-week bye this week before a showdown Saturday at No. 8 Tennessee (noon, ESPN). The Gators beat the Vols 73-43 in their SEC home opener on Jan. 7.

The Tennessee game begins a stretch in which UF will face six ranked teams in their last 11 games, including matchups at No. 1 Auburn (Feb. 8), at No. 13 Mississippi State (Feb. 11), No. 15 Texas A&M (March 1), at No. 4 Alabama (March 5) and Ole Miss (March 8).
