Florida football coach Billy Napier says QB D,J. Lagway will be limited to start fall camp

by

Florida football coach Billy Napier confirmed that starting quarterback D.J. Lagway will be limited for the start of fall camp, which starts July 30.

Sources confirmed to the Sun that Lagway suffered a lower leg injury last week, the latest setback in a series of ailments for the 6-foot-3, 241-pound sophomore from Willis, Texas. He didn’t throw during the spring due to shoulder and core issues and suffered a hamstring injury last season against Georgia.

Napier said Lagway’s status is “day to day.” Lagway was throwing during organized team activities with the Florida Gators from May through July before the leg injury last week.

“The good thing is I think we’re about a week removed, so in general he’s made a lot of quick progress,” Napier said. “But it will be something that we’re monitoring and hopefully as we go his ability to participate in practice will be a little bit more each opportunity that we get going forward.”

Napier said that the injuries have “not been ideal” for Lagway’s offseason development but that his budding star quarterback has maintained a positive attitude and has used the team off the field to focus on film study. Lagway went 6-1 as a starter for UF last season as a true freshman, passing for 1,915 yards with 12 TDs and nine interceptions to earn Football Wrtiers Association of America and Pro Football Focus freshman All-American honors.

.”He’s done a good job staying connected and I think he still has a voice as a leader,” Napier said. “He’s still walking the halls, he’s still able to be a factor in that regard. He’s still a very young player and needs these reps for development as well. When he gets back, he’ll be just fine.”

Lagway is one of a handful of UF players who will be limited to start fall camp, a list that includes linebacker Grayson Howard, wide receiver Kahleil Jackson and running back Treyon Webb.
