Drafted by the Edmonton Oilers in the third round of the 2016 NHL Draft, Niemelainen spent this past year playing for the Condors where he scored one goal and added four assists for five points in 35 regular season games. He also appeared in two playoff games but didn’t register a point.
Since beginning his North American professional career during the 2020-21 season, Niemelainen has appeared in 43 career NHL regular season games, registering an assist. Over that span, he has also gotten into 120 career AHL regular season games and put up 26 points.
Although Niemelainen’s deal is only for one season, he may opt to stay overseas for the foreseeable future. He’s had success while playing in Finland’s Liiga and could get the opportunity to play a big role for Eisbaren Berlin.
