Former Georgia assistant coach fired by Arkansas

by

A former Georgia assistant has met the end of his head coaching tenure in Arkansas. Arkansas head coach Sam Pittman, formally an assistant coach with Georgia, was fired on Sunday, according to Pete Nakos. He was fired the day after the Razorbacks lost 56-13 to Notre Dame at home.

Pittman is the fourth Power 4 head coach fired this season, along with Oklahoma State’s Mike Gundy, UCLA’s DeShaun Foster, and Virginia Tech’s Brent Pry. Pittman is owed $9.8 million on his buyout, and he ends his tenure with a record of 32-34 in six years.

He lead the Razorbacks to three winning seasons and bowl wins, but success wasn’t linear in his tenure. After his best season in 2021, where he led the Razorbacks to a 9-4 record and a win in the Outback Bowl, Arkansas never got better.

In 2023, after he finished the year 4-8, he shockingly hired Bobby Petrino to be the offensive coordinator for Arkansas. Unfortunately, he still couldn’t guide Arkansas to the top of the SEC. Petrino will replace Pittman as the interim head coach of Arkansas for now.

2025 was a make-or-break year for him, and unfortunately, it didn’t go well. Arkansas looked good against two Alabama A&M and Arkansas State, but they lost close to Ole Miss, even with backup Trinidad Chambliss coming in, and they blew a 28-10 lead to Memphis. Once the Fighting Irish ravaged the Razorbacks 56-13, he sealed his fate.

Pittman was the offensive line coach for Georgia from 2016-19. He developed first-round NFL draft picks like Andrew Thomas, Isaiah Wilson, and Isaiah Wynn. Georgia has several young and developing offensive lineman, and Pittman could be an interesting play for offensive line coach if he desires.
