After a seven-year college basketball career that took him through three different programs, former Iowa basketball guard CJ Fredrick announced on Wednesday through his social media that he has retired from the sport of basketball.
In his social media post, Fredrick stated, “Man what a ride. This game has given more to me than I could ever imagine. I’ve truly been blessed to be able to play this game and go to places I have dreamed of as a kid. Even at its lowest points, it was all worth it. I will forever love the game of basketball and the relationships it’s allowed me to have for life. To all my teammates, coaches, trainers, family and anyone I have met along the way, thank you for letting me be a small part of your life. I hope to give back to the game that gave me everything. Thank you.”
Fredrick originally started his college career with the Hawkeyes in the COVID-shortened 2019-20 campaign, where he spent two seasons in Iowa City. During his time at Iowa, Fredrick averaged 8.8 points on 47.9% from the floor, 46.6% from 3-point territory, and 74.4% from the charity stripe, to go along with 2.3 assists, 1.5 rebounds, 0.5 steals, and 0.2 blocks on 26.6 minutes in all 52 games started.

Following the 2020-21 season, Fredrick transferred to Kentucky, where he would spend two years in Lexington. Unfortunately, he would only be able to play in the 2022-23 campaign after missing the previous year recovering from a hamstring injury that required surgery. With the Wildcats, Fredrick averaged 6.1 points on 35.1% from the floor, 31.8% from 3-point territory, and 91.7% from the free throw line, to go along with 1.5 assists, 0.8 rebounds, and 0.5 blocks on 22.3 minutes in 15 starts through 27 total games.
After the 2022-23 season, he would once again enter the transfer portal, where he would finish his career with Cincinnati. During his two seasons with the Bearcats, he averaged 3.4 points on 39.4% from the floor, 41.7% from 3-point territory, and 70.6% from the charity stripe, to go along with 0.9 assists, 0.8 rebounds, 0.1 steals, and 0.1 blocks on 14.2 minutes in 10 starts through 34 total games.
While injuries included issues with his hamstring, ribs, ankle, feet, and back, significantly hampered his abilities across each of his stops, he will walk away from the game with a memorable 113 games played throughout his winding career.
