Former Mohun Bagan Super Giant coach Jose Francisco Molina has been appointed as the head coach of the Honduras men’s national football team, the country’s football federation announced on Friday.
“The decision responds to a deep and rigorous analysis process led by the Selection Committee and the sporting director Francis Hernández, in which various international profiles were evaluated until Molina was identified as the ideal professional to lead the new sporting project of the Honduran national team,” the Football Federation of Honduras said in a statement.
Molina, a former Atletico Madrid goalkeeper, returned to coaching after nearly four months. His last stint was with Bagan, which won the Indian Super League Cup and Shield — for the first time — under his tutelage last season.
However, he was shown the door after the club was knocked out in the group stages of the AIFF Super Cup in November last year, following a goalless draw with arch-rival East Bengal.
In the Honduras team, Molina replaces Reinaldo Rueda, who was dismissed after the team failed to qualify for FIFA World Cup 2026.
Honduras, 65th in the FIFA rankings, drew with Costa Rica in the qualifiers, losing out on a direct or interconfederation playoff spot.
