It’s rare to make it to the highest level of any professional sport. It’s even rarer to do it in two of them.

Austen Lane already walked away from the NFL, and now he’s walking away from the UFC.

Despite being offered a fight for July, Lane (13-8) recently notified the UFC of his retirement, according to multiple people with knowledge of the situation who recently informed MMA Junkie. Heavy was first to report the news.

Lane, 38, competed seven times in the UFC and compiled a 1-5 record with one no contest. He competed at both light heavyweight and heavyweight with his lone promotional win coming by unanimous decision vs. Robelis Despaigne in October 2024. He’d since lost three straight fights inside the distance.

Prior to his pivot to MMA in 2015, Lane played in 30 NFL games across four seasons as a defensive end for the Jacksonville Jaguars and Detroit Lions. In 2009, Lane was a first-team All-American at Murray State University and named Ohio Valley Conference defensive player of the year.
