Former Penguins Second-Round Pick Waived By Seattle

A former second-round pick by the Pittsburgh Penguins has made his rounds with NHL teams over the past year, and he hit another snag on Wednesday.

The Seattle Kraken placed forward Daniel Sprong – drafted 46th overall by the Penguins in 2015 – on waivers Wednesday afternoon just two months after acquiring him from the Vancouver Canucks.

Sprong registered a goal and two points in 10 games with Seattle this season, which was his second stint with the team. In 82 games from 2021-23 in his first stint with Seattle, he registered 27 goals and 52 points.

In the calendar year of 2024, Sprong played for three different teams. He spent the 2023-24 season with the Detroit Red Wings, putting up 18 goals and 43 points in 76 games. Sprong then signed with the Vancouver during the offseason, where he put up just one goal and three points in nine games before being traded to Seattle.

In parts of his first three NHL seasons with the Penguins spanning from 2015-19, Sprong recorded four goals and nine points across 42 games. Over the course of his NHL career so far, the 27-year-old forward has 87 goals and 164 points in 363 games.
