Johnson will join Evansville as associate head coach, ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported Thursday. It would be Johnson’s fifth stint on a staff in his home state.

Johnson left Matt Painter’s staff after this past season, his fifth with the program. He came to the Boilermakers after four seasons at Ohio State and, along with fellow assistant Paul Lusk, led the team’s defensive efforts. He helped Purdue reach three consecutive Elite Eights, including the program’s first Final Four in 42 years and a national runner-up finish in 2024.

Johnson also helped Butler reach back-to-back Final Fours under Brad Stevens in 2010-11. Other Indiana coaching assignments came at Fort Wayne and Indiana Tech.

Johnson is an Anderson native who played both baseball and basketball during a collegiate career at Lincoln Trail Community College, Lamar and Fort Wayne.

Evansville enters its fifth season under David Ragland. The Purple Aces are 40-91 in his tenure.
