Everyone loves to hear a success story.
Life is too short to be upset at people for being good at what they do. However, when your team slumps like the Detroit Red Wings, it’s tough not to look at former players and wonder what might have been.
One of those players for Red Wings fans is Jake Walman.
Walman has been an absolute delight for the San Jose Sharks. In 31 games, he has five goals, 20 assists, and 25 points, averaging 22:50 minutes on the ice per game.
His time on ice, assists, and points are all career highs. He needs seven more goals to tie his career-high of 12 goals from last season.
Surprisingly, he’s set a new record for the Sharks organization. Walman has become the fastest defenseman to record 20 assists with the team. Erik Karlsson held the previous record of 34 games, but Walman did it in 31 games.
He achieved this feat in the Sharks’ most recent game against the Edmonton Oilers. Walman assisted on the Sharks’ second goal of the night. He would finish the night with one assist and two shots in 25:51 in the 3-2 overtime loss.
Walman is currently on pace for a 66-point season. Hindsight being what it is, I think some Red Wings fans will feel the sting of this trade for a long time.
Everyone else will enjoy the feel-good success story that it is.
