Lou Carnesecca, the legendary former head coach of the St. John’s men’s basketball team, died on Saturday at the age of 99.
Inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1992, Carnesecca spent 24 seasons as the head coach for the Red Storm between 1965-70 and 1973-92 and went 526-200. During that span, St. John’s never had a losing record and went to the NCAA Tournament 18 times, including 1985 when they made the Final Four.
For his hard work, Carnesecca was named National Coach of the Year twice in his career. The New York native was also named BIG EAST Coach of the Year three times and led the Johnnies to two BIG EAST titles in 1983 and 1986.
Carnesecca leaves behind his wife, Mary, of 73 years as well as his family.
