Former Texas Longhorns Head Coach Charlie Strong is returning to the big leagues. Ian Rapoport of NFL Network confirmed on Tuesday that Strong has been hired by the Bucs to join as their defensive line coaching staff.
The former Texas coach, who spent time in Jacksonville with the Jaguars and Urban Meyer, has been an analyst for the Alabama Crimson Tide for the past season. After the Urban-to-the-NFL experiment failed, he landed as the co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach for a season at Miami before joining the army of overqualified analysts in Tuscaloosa under Nick Saban.
South Florida is a familiar place for Strong, as his former school, South Florida, shares Raymond James Stadium with the Buccaneers. Strong had a successful run with the Bulls in 2017, finishing with a 10-2 record and ranking in the AP poll for the second time ever. However, in his final season, he finished with a 4-8 record and was released shortly after.
Before the Longhorns, he was known for his role as the head coach at Louisville, where he led the Cardinals to a 23-3 record over his final two seasons, including an upset of the SEC’s Florida Gators in the Sugar Bowl.
