Former Vol records four tackles in Mississippi State’s overtime loss to Tennessee

Tennessee (4-1, 1-1 SEC) recorded its first win in SEC play on Saturday during the 2025 college football season. The Vols defeated Mississippi State (4-1, 0-1 SEC), 44-41 in overtime, at Davis Wade Stadium in Starkville, Mississippi.

Former Vol Jalen Smith played against his former team in Week 5.

The 6-foot-2, 230-pound redshirt sophomore linebacker recorded four tackles for Mississippi State against Tennessee. In five games for the Bulldogs in 2025, he has totaled 21 tackles and 0.5 tackles for a loss.

Smith appeared in 12 games for the Vols during the 2024 regular season before transferring. He totaled 34 tackles and 1.5 tackles for a loss. Smith transferred ahead of the Vols’ College Football Playoff first-round game at Ohio State.

He also appeared in five contests for Tennessee as a freshman in 2023, recording four tackles.

Smith was named to the 2025 Butkus Award Preseason Watch List.
