Former Wisconsin Badgers quarterback Cole LaCrue shined in his Eastern Illinois debut on Thursday.

Roughly one week after being named the Panthers’ starting quarterback for the 2025 campaign, LaCrue guided Eastern Illinois to a 24-14 triumph over the Dayton Flyers in Charleston, Illinois. The former Badger exploded for 196 rushing yards and three rushing scores off 26 carries, in addition to 129 yards through the air.

After falling behind 7-0 early in the first frame, the Panthers failed to score a point until the 6:12-minute mark of the second quarter. After a relatively quiet first half on offense, the former Badger registered all three of his rushing scores in the second half.

LaCrue’s first arrived with roughly six minutes to spare in the third quarter on an 11-yard attempt. In the fourth, he crossed the goal-line on a one-yard score and a six-yard carry to ultimately lift Eastern Illinois ahead 24-14 in the program’s season opener.

The 6-foot-1 signal-caller rushed for 10 yards nine times against Dayton to pace the backfield alongside running back Charles Kellom, who logged 30 carries for 133 rushing yards. With his 193 yards, LaCrue also broke the Panthers’ single-game rushing record for a quarterback.

Prior to his move to Eastern Illinois on Nov. 20, 2024, LaCrue joined Wisconsin as a three-star recruit from the class of 2023. 247Sports ranked him as the No. 1,047 player in the class, the No. 52 quarterback and the No. 6 recruit from the state of Colorado.

Despite a crowded quarterback room featuring Nick Evers, Braedyn Locke and Tanner Mordecai, LaCrue remained in Madison for a pair of seasons. He didn’t see the field and elected to transfer this past fall.

LaCrue will now look to guide Eastern Illinois to another victory when the Panthers take on Indiana State on Sept. 6.
