It’s a day of love and the offseason for college football. Many are spending time exchanging gifts and cards on this Saturday, Valentine’s Day.
Even the media networks are exchanging their cards with followers. The FOX Sports College Football page on X (formerly Twitter) had some fun by sharing the Valentine’s Day cards they created.

However, one card particularly got fans fired up. FOX Sports posted a message that included Notre Dame football. Notre Dame, of course, is an independent school that isn’t in a conference.
That post set the X and sports world ablaze. There have been many criticisms of Notre Dame football due to its status as an independent.
It went further under the microscope when they were passed over for the 2025-2026 College Football Playoffs. That spot ultimately went to James-Madison University and Miami (FL).

Notre Dame responded by declining all college football bowl invites. It was a controversial decision, directly protesting their missed selection.

Many fans and analysts believe their solution is simple: join a conference and compete in that conference. However, Notre Dame has multiple lucrative media contracts for football, including NBC.

The Fighting Irish may not want to share from their pot of gold; they have stayed independent. However, it seems the pressure to join a conference will continue–even as the subject of an innocent joke.
