Leonard Hamilton’s last year in Tallahassee led to a 17-15 record and a 8-12 mark in the ACC. Luke Loucks, in his first year, at the helm, has taken a small step back, at least in terms of results. FSU, in one sense, has had a similar season to BC — always able to hang in games late, but consistently coming up short. The Seminoles have lost by 2 at Florida, 4 vs. Duke, 1 vs. Wake Forest, 3 at SMU, and 3 vs. Virginia. They’ve had some stinkers, especially early in the season — a 40-point loss to Texas A&M in late November stands out, along with a 44-point loss to NC State — but they also appear to be peaking at the right time. FSU has won five of its last 7, only falling to two likely tournament teams in SMU and Virginia, while also picking up quality wins over Miami and Virginia Tech.
Robert McCray V is the straw that stirs the drink for FSU, leading the team in scoring (14.7 PPG) and assists (6.0) by comfortable margins. He — and FSU as a whole — are not strong shooters; McCray connects from downtown at a 31.5% clip, just marginally below the team’s 31.7% mark. This team, however, plays incredibly fast. They want to run in transition and hunt east buckets; per EvanMiya, the Seminoles rank 22nd in pace. That does not bode well for the Eagles. Despite their strong half-court defense, BC has really, really struggled at stopping teams in transition. It has cost them multiple games, most recently against Miami. I see another 5-10 point loss for the Eagles tonight.
