Georgia defender among CBS Sports’ biggest transfer portal busts

by

CBS Sports made a list of all of the most disappointing transfer portal additions from this past cycle, and unfortunately for the Georgia Bullddogs, they made the list, with edge transfer Elo Modozie making the cut.

Georgia’s a very wise team on the transfer portal, and last year was no different. Their transfer class ranked No. 25 in the country (according to 247Sports), and the spring transfer portal was a big reason why. They splurged on key acquisitions like Illinois running back Josh McCray, UCF offensive lineman Waltclaire Flynn Jr., and Miami defensive tackle Josh Horton.

The big piece was supposed to be Army edge rusher Elo Modozie. He had come off of a breakout season with the Black Knights, with 34 tackles, 6 1/2 sacks, and a touchdown return off a blocked punt. He was supposed to be the big piece in a Georgia pass rush that lost several elite talents through the transfer portal and draft. Some even believed that he could win SEC defensive player of the year.

Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, Modozie has been a non-factor. He had just five total tackles on the season, losing snaps to Justin Williams and Quintavius Johnson.

Fortunately, the Bulldogs have hit on a few other transfers. Zachariah Branch lived up to his five-star talent from USC, leading the Bulldogs in receptions (73), receiving yards (744), and receiving touchdowns. Texas A&M transfer Noah Thomas came alive later on in the season, racking up four touchdowns in a three-game span in November.

It’s fair to say the Bulldogs missed out on Elo Modozie. It’s the perils of the transfer portal, but Modozie has a chance to redeem his standing in the College Football Playoff and may just need more time to develop.
