Girls basketball: Batesville rides 1st half lead to win at Rushville

Jan. 24—On a cold night outside at Rushville, Batesville had the hot hand offensively inside Memorial Gym Thursday. The Lady Bulldogs built a 33-7 lead at the half en route to a 59-31 victory over the Lady Lions.

Batesville improves to 14-7 on the season and 4-2 in the EIAC. The Lady Lions fall to 7-15 overall and 2-4 in EIAC action.

Batesville opened the scoring with a 3-pointer from Nora Wiedeman. The Lady Lions got on the board with a drive to the bucket by Gracie Buzzard. Batesville did not give up another point to Rushville the rest of the quarter.

A free throw by Alyson Peters started a 10-0 run. Sophie Gesell hit a 3-pointer and Lydia Haskamp had back-to-back buckets. Madelyn Haskamp’s bucket in the lane closed the quarter with the Lady Bulldogs leading 13-2.

Batesville extended the lead to open the second quarter with buckets from Madelyn Haskamp and Peters. A free throw by Trisha Morgan at the 6:31 mark stopped the Lady Bulldog run. Batesville responded with four straight points from Madelyn Haskamp and a bucket by Peters off the Gesell assist to push the lead to 23-3.

Rushville’s Mikayla Herbert and Buzzard scored back-to-back buckets to get the deficit down to 16 points. Batesville answered with another 10-0 run to close the quarter. Madelyn Haskamp’s bucket started the run. After a left-wing 3-pointer from Gesell, Madelyn Haskamp added two more to the scoring column to close the first half with the Lady Bulldogs leading 33-7.

The second half was played pretty evenly. Batesville outscored Rushville 13-11 in the third quarter to lead 46-48 heading to the fourth quarters. Both teams scored 13 points over the final eight minutes of action.

Rushville was led in scoring by Carly Senour with nine points. Trisha Morgan scored eight points. Buzzard added seven points. Herbert had five points. Kelsey Morgan scored two points.

Madelyn Haskamp led the Lady Bulldogs with 18 points. Gesell finished with 13 points and Peters added 10 points.

The junior varsity Lady Bulldogs (16-1) defeated the Lady Lions 43-23. Batesville was led by Maggie Jelenik and Leah Meyer with eight points each.

North Decatur 65 Milan 8

Six Lady Chargers took to Cook Court at North Decatur for the final time in a regular season game as the Lady Chargers celebrated Senior Night with a 65-8 win over Milan. North honored seniors Madi Allen, Clare Kinker, Kelsey Haley, Brooke Mauer, Emma Schoettmer and Ally Whitaker.

North improves to 14-6 overall and 4-1 in the MHC. Milan drops to 2-15.

North took control of the game from the opening tip. The Lady Chargers led 22-3 after the first quarter and extended the lead to 37-5 at the half. Despite a running clock, North outscored Milan 28-3 in the second half to seal the 65-8 victory.

All six seniors scored in their final home game: Allen 21 points, Haley eight points, Ally Whitaker six points, Mauer three points, Kinker one point and Schoettmer one point.

The last four years these seniors have been a part of 65 wins, 35-7 record at home and a 21-2 conference record, all school records. North won two conference titles and one sectional title.
