Girls basketball: No. 1 Lady Pirates roll in opener

Nov. 11—Class 3A preseason No. 1 Greensburg opened the season Friday with an 81-23 victory over Jac-Cen-Del.

The Lady Pirates opened the scoring with a steal and layup by Mylie Wilkison. After buckets by Clarie Larrison, Mary Harmon, Wilkison and Leah West, the Lady Pirates led 10-0.

JCD got on the board with a 3-pointer by Brooklyn Simon. It was all Greensburg from there in the first quarter. West scored six of the next nine points for Greensburg, including a right corner 3-pointer. Ally Powers’ steal and layup later in the quarter put Greensburg up 25-3 and her 3-pointer capped the scoring in the opening frame with the Lady Pirates on top 28-3.

Greensburg scored the first six points of the second quarter on a drive by Harmon and four straight points from Larrison.

JCD’s Kellsie Bedel scored in the paint to stop the run by Greensburg and Kelsey Borgman followed with a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to 34-8.

Greensburg ran off the next 17 points. Wilkison started the run with a bucket on the fast break. Harmon, Wilkison and Larrison hit back-to-back-to-back 3-pointers to extend the lead to 45-8.

A bucket in the lane by Kahlen Adams and two free throws by Powers gave Greensburg a 51-8 lead with 1:05 to play in the half. JCD’s Borgman drained another 3-pointer before the break to make it 51-11 at the half.

The running clock in the second half did not slow the top-ranked Lady Pirates too much. Greensburg outscored JCD 22-5 in the third quarter and 24-10 in the fourth quarter.

Greensburg had four players score in double figures: West 22, Larrison 17, Wilkison 15 and Powers 10. Harmon finished with seven points followed by Emma Kuntz six, Adams two and Aubrie Barnes-Pettit two.

On the boards, West had a team-high nine rebounds followed by Larrison with seven and Wilkison with six.

Wilkison had a team-high four assists. McQueen, Harmon and Adams all dished out three assists.

JCD was led in scoring by Borgman with 11 points followed by Simon with five, Bedel with four and Cheyenne Cullen with three.

Greensburg hosts North Decatur Tuesday. The junior varsity game is set to tip at 6 p.m.

South Decatur 66, Southwestern 16

The Lady Cougars opened the 2024-25 season against conference foe Southwestern (Shelby) Saturday. South Decatur jumped out to a 16-7 lead after one quarter and cruised to a 66-16 victory.

In the opening eight minutes, Raegan Benge scored five points, including a 3-pointer. Makayla Somers added a pair of buckets for four points. Paige McQueen drained a bucket from long range. Makayla Puckett and Lilly Murray both added a bucket for the Lady Cougars.

South took control in the second quarter, outscoring the Lady Spartans 24-2. Eight different Lady Cougars scored in the quarter, led by Riley Benge’s seven points. Dalilah Martin scored five points in the quarter as South led 40-9 at the half.

South continued to limit the Lady Spartans’ offense in the third quarter, outscoring Southwestern 15-4. Makayla Somers poured in six points in the quarter and Murray added four for South.

In the fourth, South outscored the visitors 11-3 to close out the 66-16 win. Riley Benge led South with six in the final quarter.

For the Lady Cougars, Makayla Somers led in scoring with 14 points. Riley Benge was next with 13 points followed by Raegan Benge nine, Martin eight, Murray eight, McQueen six, Puckett four, Taylor Somers two and Rori Phelps two.

Riley Benge had a team-high eight rebounds. Makayla Somers pulled down four rebounds. Puckett dished out a team-high six assists.

Rushville

The Lady Lions opened the basketball season with a double weekend, playing at New Castle Friday and hosting Eastern Hancock Saturday.

Friday, the Lady Lions knocked off New Castle in overtime 68-65.

Audrey Angle led the Lady Lions with 18 points, seven rebounds and one assist. Angle was clutch at the free throw line, going 10-of-12.

Trisha Morgan tallied 14 points, two rebounds, one steal and one assist. Carly Senour finished with 13 points, two rebounds and five assists.

Leonie Boyer had 11 points, five rebounds and four assists. Gracie Buzzard added seven points, three rebounds, one assist and two steals. Kelsey Morgan had three points, three rebounds and one assist. Makenna Ripberger chipped in with two points and three rebounds.

In the junior varsity game, the Lady Lions defeated New Castle 46-32.

For Rushville, Melaney Mahan had 10 points and nine rebounds. Charlotte Caviness had nine points. Josie Corn scored six points and had three steals. Jerrica Taylor scored six points. Charli Marcum added five points and four assists. Kiarra Flannery scored five points. Becca Tabeling had three points and three assists. Jasmine Taylor scored two points and Emily Rouse had four rebounds.

Saturday, Eastern Hancock handed the Lady Lions their first loss of the young season 47-33.

Boyer led the Lady Lions with nine points, 12 rebounds, one assist and one steal. Morgan tallied six points, seven rebounds, and two steals. Senour finished with five points, one rebound, three assists and two steals. Angle added five points, eight rebounds, one assist and four steals. Ripberger contributed four points and four rebounds. Buzzard had four points, three rebounds, one assist and one steal.

The JV Lady Lions defeated Eastern Hancock 16-8 in a shortened 2-quarter contest. Marcum had four points, four steals and two rebounds. Caviness scored six points. Josie Corn, Becca Tabeling, and Kiara Flannery each scored two points.

The Lady Lions are next in action Saturday at South Dearborn.

Batesville

The Lady Bulldogs travelled to New Palestine Saturday night. After leading after the first quarter and at the half, the host Lady Dragons rallied to knock off Batesville 43-34.

Batesville doubled up New Palestine 12-6 in the first quarter and led 19-17 at the half. In the third, the Lady Dragons outscored the Lady Bulldogs 14-8 to grab a 31-27 lead. New Palestine extended the lead in the fourth and secured the 9-point win.

For Batesville, Sydney Campbell tallied 11 points, nine rebounds and one assist. Maddie Haskamp finished with seven points, six rebounds and three steals. Sophie Gesell had seven points, five rebounds and four steals. Nora Wiedeman added four points, four rebounds and two steals.

Marlee Obermeyer had three points, one rebound and two steals. Lydia Haskamp finished with two points and four rebounds. Kaylin Kathmann had four assists and two steals.

The Lady Bulldogs (1-1) travel to South Dearborn Thursday for their first conference matchup of the season.

The junior varsity Lady Bulldogs fought back from a 15-point deficit, but could not overcome the Lady Dragons, falling 33-29. Molly Gessell led the Lady Bulldogs with 13 points.
