Good Morning, Illini Nation: Proving himself one of the nation’s best

by

Dec. 12—At this point, it’s not hype surrounding Kasparas Jakucionis. It’s simply recognition of how good the Illinois freshman guard has been in the last two weeks. A four-game stretch that has the 6-foot-6 Lithuanian averaging 22 points, seven rebounds, 5.3 assists and 1.3 steals while shooting 51 percent overall, 56 percent from three-point range and 95 percent at the free throw line.

“He’s absolutely dominating every game, and it’s insane,” fellow Illinois guard Kylan Boswell said. “I love what he’s doing right now. I’m so happy for him. His energy and his IQ and his efficiency helps all of us.”

Jakucionis scored a career high 24 points Tuesday in Illinois’ win against No. 20 Wisconsin to go with six rebounds and five assists. He made 4 of 8 three-pointers and was perfect at the free throw line.

“He’s mature; he’s played against grown men,” Wisconsin coach Greg Gard said. “Where he’s come from, he’s well trained. They do a great job of developing. … He’s what I thought watching him on film. Until you see him in person you’re never quite sure does it translate, but he’s a real good player with vision and poise. He’s listed as a freshman, but he’s not. He’s got more experience than a typical freshmen.”
