Gretchen Walsh Blasts Historic Relay Splits, Third-Fastest 100 Fly

Eddie Reese Texas Showdown, Session 2: Gretchen Walsh Blasts Historic Relay Splits, Third-Fastest 100 Fly Ever

It’s become standard operating procedure for Gretchen Walsh: whatever meet at which the University of Virginia senior is racing, records will be threatened. That was the case Friday evening at the Eddie Reese Texas Showdown as Walsh posted the second-quickest 50 freestyle relay split ever and the third-best mark in history in the 100 butterfly, times only she has ever surpassed, before her 100 fly relay split beat any in history by an an enormous margin.

The two-day, three-session meet in Austin, Texas features four of the top programs in the country, with the Cavaliers, the NC State Wolfpack and the Arizona State Sun Devils visiting the Longhorns, but the Virginia women have been dominant, per their usual pattern of performance. They won the 200 free relay by two seconds, but it was Walsh’s individual effort that was most eye-popping.

Walsh clocked 20.09 on the second leg, the second-fastest 50 freestyle split ever behind the 19,95 she swam at last season’s ACC Championships. It is a good bet that Walsh will again clock 19 during her final collegiate championship season. As for her teammates, Claire Curzan led off before older sister Alex Walsh and freshman Anna Moesch brought the relay home, with all three splitting sub-21.5, and Virginia’s final time was 1:24.29, quicker than any team aside from the Cavaliers swam at last season’s NCAA Championships.

The Texas team of Grace CooperEmma SticklenAva Longi and Abby Arens placed second in 1:26.44, and NC State’s Olivia NelLily ChristiansonTyler Driscoll and Erika Pelaez took third in 1:27.67.

A half-hour later, Walsh took a shot at her own American, NCAA and U.S. Open records in the 100 fly before coming up just short at 47.48. The only two quicker performances also belong to Walsh, with her 47.35 from the Tennessee Invitational in November and the 47.42 she swam to win last year’s NCAA title in the event. Sticklen took second in 49.55, improving upon her own season-best time and remaining ranked No. 4 nationally, but she was still two seconds back, with NC State’s Leah Shackley third (50.95).

Walsh returned at the end of the session to post the fastest 100 fly split in history by more than one-and-a-half seconds. She split 47.15, which annihilated the previous best of 48.76 from Maggie Mac Neil in 2023. Walsh has traditionally handled backstroke legs on Virginia’s medley relays, but Curzan’s presence allowed her to shift to swim her signature stroke.

The same quartet that raced on Virginia’s free relay earlier in the evening combined to post a time of 3:21.48, just four tenths off the NCAA record Virginia swam last March but much quicker than the American record of 3:22.48 that Virginia swam on two separate occasions in 2022. Both Walsh sisters were on all previous record-setting squads, but Gretchen has to butterfly while Alex has taken over on breaststroke after swimming butterfly in both 2022 and 2024. Curzan led off here, and Moesch anchored the team.

Texas’ Berit BerglundPiper Enge, Sticklen and Longi came in second at 3:28.00, with the NC State team of Kennedy NobleAubree Brouwer, Shackley and Pelaez third in 3:29.39.

In other races contested Friday evening, the Texas men continued to impress behind the sophomores Rex Maurer and Nate Germonprez plus world-record-holding senior Luke Hobson and Olympic champion Hubert Kos. Their efforts helped Texas to 715 overall points, comfortably ahead of Arizona State (620.5), Virginia (587.5) and NC State (530).

Men’s 400 IM

During his stunning performance at the Texas Invite in November, Rex Maurer nearly broke the American record in the 400 IM, finishing in 3:34.19. He entered the spring semester ranked No. 1 in the country in the event by almost five seconds, and even though his time Friday fell well short of his season best, it was still faster than anyone else has recorded so far this season.

Maurer built a lead of almost three seconds in the final on the way to a final time of 3:38.83, with Texas teammate David Johnston coming in second at 3:41.40. NC State’s Kyle Ponsler was third in 3:44.85, but the third and fourth-best times of the night came from the consolation final. Texas freshman Cooper Lucas produced a time of 3:41.66 to edge out Arizona State’s Michael Hochwalt, who touched in 3:41.98.

Women’s 200 Freestyle

Two swimmers who raced in the Olympic semifinals of the 200-meter free faced off in the yards version of the event, and Virginia’s Aimee Canny came out on top ahead of Texas’ Erin Gemmell.

Gemmell led in the early stages, but Canny took over at the halfway point and held on to finish in 1:42.42, a quarter-second ahead of Gemmell’s 1:42.79. Both swimmers improved upon their own season-best times but remained ranked fifth and sixth in the country, respectively. Third went to Texas’ Lillie Nesty, whose time of 1:43.21 was good for No. 12 in the country.

Midway through this college season, Luke Hobson broke the world record in the short course meters 200 free, adding to his U.S. Open mark in the 200-yard free and his Olympic bronze medal in the long course event.

As Hobson aims for another NCAA title in the yards event, he swam his best time of the season in this quad meet, clocking 1:31.26 as he held off Arizona State’s Patrick Sammon. His time ranks No. 3 in the country behind Tennessee’s Jordan Crooks and Alabama’s Charlie Hawke

Sammon took second in 1:31.85, with teammate Tiago Behar third (1:33.27) and the Longhorns’ Chris Guiliano fourth (1:33.29). In the B-final, ASU’s Jonny Kulow clocked 1:32.72 to beat out the Texas duo of Camden Taylor (1:33.17) and Coby Carrozza (1:33.69).

Women’s 100 Breaststroke

Alex Walsh has never raced the 100 breaststroke at the NCAA Championships, previously opting for the 400 IM on the meet’s middle day the last three years after racing the 200 free as a freshman, but Walsh has thrown her hat into the conversation in the shorter breaststroke race. She posted a time of 56.98 to win at the quad meet, the top time in the country by a half-second.

Texas freshman Piper Enge also posted an impressive performance, coming in at 57.69 to move to No. 3 nationally behind Walsh and Florida’s Anita Bottazzo. Virginia’s Emma Weber, the runnerup at the U.S. Olympic Trials in the 100-meter breast, clocked 58.18 for third, good for No. 6 nationally.
