ACC Championships, Day 4: Gretchen Walsh Posts Country’s Fastest Time in 100 Backstroke

After taking part in two relay wins at the start of the ACC Championships, Alex Walsh has now captured first place in an individual event. She placed first in the 200 butterfly final Friday evening as Virginia extended its lead over Stanford in the women’s competition. One event later, her younger sister Gretchen Walsh became the first swimmer to go under 49 in the 100 back this season as she won her second individual race of the meet.

At the end of the session, the sisters teamed up with Claire Curzan and Anna Moesch to crush the fastest time ever in the women’s 400 medley relay.

On the men’s side, Cal continues to hold the lead in its first year in the conference over Bay Area rival Stanford, but the Cardinal had chances to close the gap Friday with the top seed in all three men’s swimming events. Andrei Minakov converted on the first chance, overtaking Dare Rose of the Golden Bears for the win in the 200 fly.

In addition to the 200 fly and 100 back, the session includes the 100 breaststroke and 400 medley relay for both genders plus men’s platform diving.

Women’s 200 Butterfly

Alex Walsh could not be matched in the first final of the night, jumping out to a half-second lead just two lengths into the 200 fly final and then by 1.39 seconds at the halfway point. From there, the field could not make up any ground on the fifth-year Virginia swimmer, who took a shot at her own NCAA record of 1:49.16 but fell off the pace down the stretch.

Walsh finished in 1:50.43, making her the second-fastest swimmer in the country this season. The only swimmer to go faster is Texas’ Emma Sticklen, the two-time NCAA champion in the event. Ironically, Sticklen raced the 200 fly at nearly the exact same moment at the SEC Championships, where she came up just one hundredth short of Walsh’s NCAA standard.

Second place went to Stanford’s Caroline Bricker in 1:52.37, just off her season-best mark of 1:52.21 (previously ranked fourth, now fifth), while her teammate Lillie Nordmann placed third in 1:52.44. But Virginia countered that scoring punch with Tess Howley (1:52.72) and Katie Grimes (1:53.63) placing fourth and fifth, respectively.

Men’s 200 Butterfly

Cal’s Dare Rose set the early pace in the 200 fly, holding down a lead at all three intermediate splits, but Stanford’s Andrei Minakov had a extra burst down the back stretch as he completed the sweep of the butterfly events. In fourth place and a half-second off the lead entering the final two lengths, Minakov finished in 25.37, almost a second quicker than anyone else in the field, to come into the wall in 1:39.03. He jumped to No. 3 in the national standings behind Georgia’s Luca Urlando and Arizona State’s Ilya Kharun.

Rose placed second in 1:39.47, making him the sixth-best swimmer in the country for 2024-25, and third went to North Carolina’s Seb Lunak in 1:40.12, cutting a second off his season-best time for the best conference finish of his career. A second Cal swimmer finished among the top four as Gabriel Jett came in at 1:40.28, just ahead of Florida State’s Logan Robinson (1:40.34).

Women’s 100 Backstroke

Following a day off from racing Thursday, Gretchen Walsh returned to the pool for the 100 backstroke and resumed her conference-dominating ways, using the full allowance of 15 meters kicking underwater off each wall to open up a huge advantage on Cal’s Mary-Ambre Moluh. Walsh was out in 23.40 and back in 25.55, resulting in a final time of 48.95. That eclipsed her previous top mark of 49.31 as the best in the country this season, and she beat the SEC Championships-winning mark of Bella Sims (49.20) by a quarter-second.

Interestingly, this might be the last time Walsh swims the 100 back in her college career: her NCAA Championships program figures to include the 100 fly plus the 50 and 100 freestyle, the same lineup she swam last year, and the presence of Claire Curzan has shifted Walsh to the butterfly leg on UVA’s 400 medley relay. That said, it would be a stunner if anyone else can come close to Walsh’s all-time record of 48.10, so she will surely finish her college career having lapped every other performer in history in all four of her main events.

Moluh placed second in 50.22, just ahead of the NC State freshman duo of Leah Shackley (50.37) and Erika Pelaez (50.46), with Cal veteran Isabelle Stadden coming in fifth (50.97).

Men’s 100 Backstroke

NC State’s Quintin McCarty had already won the 50 free in Greensboro, and he jumped out to a lead in the first 25 yards of the 100 back final, but Florida State freshman Michel Arkhangelskiy took over by four hundredths at the halfway point before dominating the back half of the race. Arkhangelskiy, a native of Nice, France, touched in 44.49, making him the fourth-fastest swimmer in the country behind Florida’s Jonny Marshall and the Texas duo of Will Modglin and Hubert Kos.

McCarty came in second in 44.99 while Virginia’s David King finished in 45.11 to edge out NC State’s Hudson Williams (45.15) and Cal’s Mewen Tomac (45.16) for third. Stanford’s Aaron Sequeira, who swam the top prelims time at 45.06, fell to eighth.

Women’s 100 Breaststroke

At the 2024 ACC Championships, there was a three-way tie for third place in the women’s 100 breaststroke, with Virginia’s Emma Weber, Duke’s Kaelyn Gridley and North Carolina’s Skyler Smith all coming in at 58.81 to finish behind Jasmine Nocentini (UVA) and Abby Arens (NC State). Now, with N0centini having departed college swimming and Arens having moved on to Texas, the third-place trio squared off again Friday in Greensboro, with all beating their 2024 conference marks.

Smith had the most speed, turning in 27.23 at the halfway point, but Weber moved ahead around the 75-yard mark before Gridley came over the top on the final length. Gridley touched out Weber by four hundredths, 58.23 to 58.27, with Smith taking third in 58.63. None of the women swam their season-best times (with all ranked in the national top-10), but they will match up again while battling for NCAA A-final spots next month. Florida State’s Maddy Huggins was the best of the rest in 59.08.

Men’s 100 Breaststroke

Louisville veteran Denis Petrashov took down his own conference record in the 100 breaststroke, holding Stanford’s Ron Polonsky at bay and cranking into the wall in 50.62. That mark, surpassed only by Florida’s Julian Smith and Texas’ Nate Germonprez so far this season, eclipsed the 50.78 that Petrashov swam two years ago as well as the ACC meet record of 50.82 held by Virginia’s Noah Nichols.

Polonsky was second in 50.99, good for No. 6 in the national rankings, and third went to Cal’s Yamato Okadome in 51.12. Virginia Tech’s Carles Coll Marti, already the winner in the 200 IM this week, went 51.34 for fourth.

Men’s 400 Medley Relay

A barnburner in the men’s 400 medley relay had four teams in contention until the very end. Florida State led throughout, but a sensational sprint finish from North Carolina State’s Jerry Fox propelled the Wolfpack to the front by three tenths over Cal. Fox came home in 40.81, and combined with Quintin McCartySam Hoover and Luke Miller, NC State finished in 3:01.62. That foursome consisted of all U.S. swimmers and came up just 11-hundredths behind the American record set by Cal in 2017. The team was a half-second off the conference record of 3:01.10 set by a team also including Miller two years ago.

Cal’s Gabriel JettYamato OkadomeDara Rose and Nans Mazellier placed second in 3:01.92, with Okadome the fastest breaststroker at 50.71. Virginia Tech got third in 3:02.25 with Youssef RamadanCarles Coll MartiMario Molla Yanes and Brendan Whitfield.

Florida State fell to fourth (3:02.33) despite Max Wilson posting the quickest backstroke split (44.82) and Michel Arkhangelskiy recording a 43.33 leg on butterfly. Arkhangelskiy had already won the 100 back earlier in the session, and this time was the fourth-fastest butterfly split ever, with only Josh Liendo (twice) and Ilya Kharun having ever gone quicker.
