Guard Kaiya Wynn to miss entire 2024-25 Lady Vols basketball season with torn Achilles

Lady Vols basketball senior guard Kaiya Wynn will miss the entire 2024-25 season with a torn Achilles, Tennessee coach Kim Caldwell announced Tuesday.

Wynn was seen using a boot and a scooter during Tennessee’s Market Square Madness event on Oct. 18, the same day she suffered the injury to her right leg, according to Tennessee athletics. Wynn will have it surgically repaired.

“While I am disappointed in this setback, I am excited about the upcoming year that awaits my Lady Vol teammates and coaches, and I plan to be right beside them to provide my vocal and emotional support from the sidelines,” Wynn wrote in a post on Instagram. “Though I have a challenge before me and obstacles to overcome, I am grateful for everyone in our program, university and fan base, as well as my family and friends for their encouragement, good wishes and prayers … I am confident I can look forward to pursuing my final year of eligibility next season on Rocky Top. “

The Nashville native has been with the program since she was a freshman. Wynn took a bigger role last season with the Lady Vols’ need for a backup point guard, and she has been seen as a glue player for the team since she arrived on campus.

Wynn averaged 4.4 points, 2.6 rebounds and 1.6 assists in 13.4 minutes per game last season. She was one of only five players to appear in all 33 games and was a fit for Caldwell’s system. Her athleticism, speed and strong defense would have been key for the Lady Vols’ depth in Caldwell’s first season as their coach.

Wynn has dealt with a number of injuries while at Tennessee. As a freshman, she missed time due to a lower leg injury, and she has broken her nose multiple times.

Wynn will seek a medical redshirt and plans to complete her eligibility next season.
