NCAA Division II Championships, Night 4: Jacob Hamlin, Agata Naskret Break National Records as Drury Leads
Drury has maintained leads in both the women’s and men’s competition at the NCAA Division II Championships in Indianapolis, but the team titles will come down to the final day of the meet.
Drury got individual wins from Jonette Laegreid and Mellie Wijk Friday evening, but Nova Southeastern sits only five points back entering the final day of competition. Drury has 358 to Nova’s 353, with Colorado Mesa (284), Indy (272) and Lynn (174) among the top five. For the men, Drury’s lead is 35 points, with a total of 390 leading Tampa (355), McKendree (262), Indy (239) and Grand Valley (186).
Individually, Tampa’s Jacob Hamlin and Colorado Mesa’s Agata Naskret each set NCAA Division II records, with Hamlin winning his third individual event in record time in the 500 freestyle while Naskret lowered her own mark in her second consecutive 100 backstroke victory. The session concluded with two extremely competitive races in the 200 free relay.

Women’s 500 Freestyle
Tori Meklensek of Simon Fraser University nearly captured a national title two nights earlier in the 1000 freestyle, leading through the opening 800 yards of the race before Indy’s Andrea Gomez Espionsa took over and won by three hundredths. But over half the distance, Meklensek overtook earlier leader Lucy Hedley at the halfway point and took over to win by 2.70 seconds.
Meklensek came in at 4:44.87, with Hedley coming in at 4:47.57 for a runnerup finish. Azusa Pacific’s Montana White was the only other swimmer to break 4:50, touching in 4:48.78.

Men’s 500 Freestyle
Already a winner earlier in the competition in the 1000 free and 200 free, Jacob Hamlin put on another strong performance for Tampa as he shattered the NCAA Division II record and brought his team to within two points of first-place Drury. Indy’s Cedric Buessing set the national record at 4:16.15 last month, but Hamlin entered the national meet with a best time not far behind at 4:16.84. After Buessing chose to scratch the 500, the door was open for a dominant finals performance.
Hamlin smashed right through 4:15 and recorded a time of 4:14.62, one-and-a-half seconds underneath the previous mark. He also shattered the meet record of 4:17.09, set in 2016 by Dion Dreesens. Wingate’s Fernando Dehaudt took second in 4:20.83, and Tampa secured a 1-3 finish as Rafael Ponce De Leon held off charges from Drury’s Matteo Vissotto and Nova Southeastern’s Luca Alessandrini for third, with Ponce De Leon clocking 4:21.73.

Women’s 100 Backstroke
Colorado Mesa’s Agata Naskret secured her second consecutive national title in the 100 backstroke while taking down the Division II national record in the event. She previously set the top mark Thursday evening, clocking 51.53 on the leadoff leg of her team’s 400 medley relay, and she bested that time by a hundredth as she puled away from the field to secure the win here. Naskret has now lowered the national mark from 52.07 to 51.52 this season.
The race was tight at the halfway point, with Naskret only hundredths ahead of Augustana’s Bryn Greenwaldt and Lynn’s Luna Mertins, but Naskret’s 26.41 homecoming split proved the difference. Mertins ended up taking second in 52.37, with Greenwaldt third in 52.49.

After claiming a title in the 100 fly Thursday, Lustig was never challenged in the 200-yard final, going up by more than seven tenths after just 50 yards and pulling away on each split until the last one. Lustig came in at 1:40.89, just 14-hundredths short of the national record of 1:40.75 he set in his first national win in 2013.
Lynn’s Vitaly Kostin out-split Lustig coming home, going 26.53 to move from sixth place into second. He finished in 1:43.96. Third went to McKendree’s Volodymyr Gavrysh in 1:44.26, just head of Drury’s Alejandro Villarejo (1:44.36) and Rollins’ Luke Dinges (1:44.39).

Men’s 200 Freestyle Relay
The Grand Valley men finished off the session with a win, but it did not come easily as the top nine teams were separated by less than a second and Matthew Bosch had to hold off Northern Michigan’s Leo Nolles by just three hundredths. In the end, the team of Evan Scotto Divetta, Esteban Nunez Del Pradoeban, Aaron Dies and Bosch clocked 1:18.10, while Northern Michigan’s William LaCount, Gabriel Fulconi, Daniel Khmara and Nolles settled for second in 1:18.13, despite Nolles’ 18.76 opening leg.
Tampa had the early lead with Tibor Tistan, who was one hundredth ahead of Grand Valley’s Scotto Divetta, and then St. Cloud State took the lead when Mason Beck went 19.08. Tampa was back in front after three legs before Bosch and Nolles went to work and took over. Tampa ended up third in 1:18.28 with Tistan, Caleb Brandon, Gabriel Rzezwicki and Rafael Ponce De Leon, just ahead of St. Cloud State (1:18.40).
