Alex Dombrandt has been named the new captain of Harlequins after Stephan Lewies stepped down from the role.

South African Lewies, who had four years as captain of the club, led the club to the 2020-21 Premiership title.

Dombrandt, 27, has scored 70 tries in 139 appearances since joining the club from Cardiff Met University in 2018.

The number eight has 17 England caps and has scored one try for his country.

“I’m immensely proud to be named men’s club captain and hugely honoured to be taking over from Steph, someone who has been a huge influence on my career and leaves an incredible legacy as one of only two Harlequins captains to lift the Premiership trophy,” Dombrandt said.

Lewies joined Harlequins in 2019 and took over as captain from Chris Robshaw the following year.

The 32-year-old second row has 70 appearances for the club, scoring eight tries as well as one international cap for the Springboks.

He captained Harlequins to their first ever European Champions Cup semi-final last season.

“It’s been a huge honour to captain Harlequins,” Lewies said.

“I’m very proud of what we have achieved together over the past four years and the special memories we have made.

“I’m excited for what we can achieve next with Dommers at the helm.”

Harlequins begin the new Premiership season away to Sale Sharks on Sunday, 22 September.
