High school football: University names longtime assistant Matt Trumbly head coach

Patience paid off Wednesday for longtime University assistant football coach Matt Trumbly.

On staff for the last 11 seasons in a variety of roles, Trumbly was named the Titans’ head coach for 2025, athletic director Staci Hahn told The News-Journal. The 41-year-old will take over for Justin Roberts, who resigned Jan. 13 after going 19-5, capturing the school’s first district championship and advancing twice to the second round of the FHSAA playoffs in two years.

“When this opportunity came open, I listened to the kids, the parents, the community and the guys on staff. It became clear that I was a guy they trusted to lead the program,” Trumbly said.

Trumbly served as University’s quarterbacks coach over the past two seasons but also has experience as a co-defensive coordinator, co-offensive coordinator, special teams coordinator and position coach for wide receivers, defensive backs and linebackers. In addition, he has worked as a teacher in the school’s P.E. department for seven years.

“We are thrilled to have Matt step into the head coach position,” Hahn said. “He has tirelessly worked with the Titan football program since the opening of the school, always doing whatever was asked of him — both as a coach and an employee. His dedication to the program, his players and the community is unmatched. We are confident that Matt will return to the roots of Titan football, increasing community involvement and continuing to foster strong relationships with the players and families he’s been working with for over a decade.”

Trumbly graduated from Deltona and played for the Wolves’ varsity team through the 2001 season. During his junior year, all four coaches in University’s 15-year history were involved with Deltona’s football team in some capacity — Trumbly played wide receiver, Mike Vogt was the starting quarterback, Brian Kells called the defense as coordinator and Roberts was the ball boy with father, Preston, the head coach.

“That’s what we’ve built. We take care of our own,” Trumbly said.

Trumbly notes that the Titans have a “lot of varsity reps to replace.” University is projected to lose 98.9% of its offensive production from the fall, factoring in the impending graduations of quarterback Malachi Walters, running backs Anthony May and Beechie Morris, wide receivers Jermane Hayes and Isaiah Baker and tight end Jaylen Hill, plus the transfer departure of junior wideout Barrett Schulz to Lake Mary.

Second-leading tackler Dominic Maultsby, Stetson signee Devin Carson, hard-hitting safety Jaay-R Cook and interior run stuffer Justin Ortiz highlight the departing defensive seniors.

“We’re going to work hard and develop the kids that we’ve got to try to take another step to where the standard of the program rises,” Trumbly said.

Trumbly becomes the third new coach hired in the Volusia-Flagler area since the conclusion of the 2024 season, joining Saul Rodriguez (Atlantic) and Alex Russell (Pine Ridge). Flagler Palm Coast still has a vacancy to fill after parting ways with Daniel Fish, who guided the Bulldogs to nine wins and an at-large berth into the FHSAA Class 7A playoffs in his second year in charge.
