UFC 316 took place Saturday at Prudential Center in Newark, N.J., and it proved to be one of the most meaningful events of the year with two championship fights closing the show.
Both results were definitive, too, with Merab Dvalishvili (20-4 MMA, 13-2 UFC) submitting Sean O’Malley (18-3 MMA, 10-3 UFC) in the main event to defend his bantamweight championship for the second time, while in the co-headliner Kayla Harrison (19-1 MMA, 3-0 UFC) captured the women’s bantamweight strap with a submission of Julianna Peña (11-6 MMA, 8-4 UFC).

Harrison became the second fighter in history to win a UFC championship and Olympic gold medal. Henry Cejudo also accomplished the feat.
Harrison became the seventh undisputed UFC women’s bantamweight champion.
Harrison has earned 14 of her 19 career victories by stoppage. She has earned both of her UFC stoppage victories by submission.
Harrison’s two submission victories in UFC women’s bantamweight competition are tied for second-most in divisional history behind Ronda Rousey (three).
Peña became the third fighter in history to have two UFC championship reigns and no title defenses. Randy Couture and Carla Esparza also experienced the dubious feat.

Joe Pyfer def. Kelvin Gastelum
Joe Pyfer (14-3 MMA, 5-1 UFC) earned just the second decision victory of his career.

Mario Bautista def. Patchy Mix
Mario Bautista’s (16-2 MMA, 10-2 UFC) eight-fight UFC winning streak at bantamweight is the second-longest active streak in the division behind Dvalishvili (12).
