Roberto Hernandez, the most decorated Salvadorian archer in history, topped compound men’s qualification today at the San Salvador 2026 Grand Prix of the Americas on Thursday.
His score of 712 edged Colombia’s Pablo Gomez Zuluaga by one point, with seven athletes surpassing the 700 mark.
Hernandez was the Pan American Games Champion in 2019 and won the Central American and Caribbean Games in 2018. San Salvador serves as the second qualifier for this year’s edition of that multisport event.
With compound archery set to debut at LA28, the 37-year-old archer has his sights set on Olympic qualification.
The compound women’s ranking round was led by Guatemala’s Danica Fránces Barrera Arana with 689.
In recurve men, Chile’s Andres Gallardo led with 666, while Colombian veteran Ana Maria Rendon topped recurve women with 641 – a full 13 points ahead of second-placed teammate Maira Sepulveda. Rendon, a four-time Olympian, won individual bronze at the Copa Merengue last year.
The qualifying tournament the 2026 Central American and Caribbean Games takes place on Friday. With many of the region’s leading nations already having secured quota places in Santo Domingo 2025, the remaining spots will be contested by nations including Guadeloupe, Venezuela, Bahamas, Honduras and Martinique.
The main competition continues on Saturday with team and individual eliminations. Finals take place on Sunday and will be streamed on archery+.
