Culture might be the most overused word in sports, but when you talk to the University of Houston men’s basketball program, you find out quickly that culture is everything to the Cougars, and it starts and ends with Coach Kelvin Sampson.

I mean, it took me a while to get used to it, um, even towards the end of last year I felt like, um.
I wasn’t like completely used to it uh because you know I felt like in practice I was practicing not to get yelled at and stuff like that while this year uh my mindset is like it’s gonna happen uh you know it’s it’s inevitable at the end of the day so uh you just go out there and bring your all, uh, just come to work every day with the right attitude and the right effort and, uh, things will go smooth, uh.
I mean he has a post on the team whenever you come in there with the wrong attitude I feel like he could sense it out quickly and you’ll be on the line running and things like that and I feel like the difference is um.
You know he holds everybody accountable, um, from top to bottom.

All these guys wanna win.
I mean, and I think it’s part of our culture.
Coach Sam doesn’t recruit guys who don’t who aren’t high character guys, um, who don’t who aren’t all in about winning, and I mean if you wanna win you gotta pride yourself on the defensive end and I think that’s what he’s been doing ever since he got here.
