Hannah Hidalgo appears to be doing Hannah Hidalgo things again.
After a quiet-ish last two games, the Notre Dame women’s basketball star lifted the sixth-ranked Irish to a 73-64 win over Cal in the quarterfinals of the ACC tournament on Friday, scoring game-leading 25 points on 9-of-25 shooting. She also added four rebounds and two steals.
Hidalgo, a top candidate for Naismith National Player of the Year, finished just ahead of her season average of 24.2 points per game this season, which ranks third in the country. The win over Cal sends Notre Dame to the semifinals of the ACC tournament for the third consecutive season.
The sophomore guard created a 4-point play in the second quarter when she drew the AND-one foul as she fell down on the court after pulling up from the top of the key for a 3-pointer.
But where Hidalgo found most of her success against Cal was in the third quarter, when she scored nine of her 25 points on the day in the frame alone. Of those nine points, perhaps the biggest came during a 12-0 run near the end of the quarter when she splashed a 3-pointer in transition to put Notre Dame up 53-47.
