In October, Michigan State basketball coach Tom Izzo took his Spartans to Northern Michigan University in Marquette for an exhibition game.
It turned out to be far more than just a basketball game.
It was an event that Izzo had dreamed about for many years. MSU’s Hall of Fame coach was able to take his team back to his roots in the Upper Peninsula at his alma mater in a sold-out Superior Dome.
The game, broadcast by the Big Ten Network, was a homecoming celebration for Izzo at the school where he played from 1973-77 and was a Division 2 All-American. The school retired his jersey to the rafters during a timeout in the first half of the game.
The visit turned out to be a memory maker for Izzo, his players, and his alma mater.
The Big Ten Network captured a behind-the-scenes look at MSU’s visit and the game with a documentary titled “The B1G Story: Tom Izzo Back Home again.” The documentary will debut at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 11. It will then re-air three more times during the week.
